I have been involved in the tree industry as a climbing arborist for more than 25 years. The industry was much different when I started my career. We were taught to free climb without being secured, which was an everyday norm. Work Positioning Lanyards were basically unheard of and often referred to as “sissy straps.” P.P.E. (personal protective equipment) was rarely used and viewed as a nuisance. Nowadays I couldn’t imagine working without these tools. They have made us work much safer, more efficient and help provide a better product for our clients. In those early days information moved along much slower and took longer to get across the industry.

Current day information moves extremely fast, perhaps a little too quickly. Whereas in the past a tool or technique would take quite a bit of time to get up and running; ensuring all the components worked well together and the textiles were fit for a purpose. Most of those early innovations were produced by manufacturers and many still are.

In these times of instant information and platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram I have seen an influx of techniques making their way into the industry. Many of my co-workers are showing me some of these techniques and it has been a bit troubling. Often they don’t see how these techniques could be dangerous because of potential forces and configuration of equipment.

If you’re interested in making improvements in equipment or techniques seek a qualified and competent person to help guide you along. The equipment and techniques I’m using today are much different than in the past. I’m able to work considerably safer and the work is much easier which will prolong my career. Just be aware of the latest and greatest and all things new and shiny because they may not be all they’ve cracked up to be.
