Michigan Lilies: A Hidden Gem in Illinois
Exploring the beauty of nature is a past time for many. Extensive travel is not necessary to fall upon spectacular sights. So much of nature’s beauty can be found along the local recreational paths offered throughout our counties and forest preserves. There is nothing better than stumbling upon wildflowers flourishing in an area that otherwise is overlooked. Early July offers a slew of stunning wildflowers that come into bloom, one of which is the Michigan lily.
The Michigan lily, scientifically referred to as Lilium michiganense, belongs to the Liliaceae family. Despite its name, it is not exclusive to Michigan but found throughout the Great Lakes region, including parts of Illinois. It thrives in a variety of habitats, ranging from moist meadows to open woodlands. The species favors locations with well-drained soil and moderate sunlight, creating a perfect niche for it to grow.
The Michigan lily boasts unique physical attributes that make it a standout wildflower. It stands tall, reaching heights of three to six feet (3’ – 6’), with a rigid, unbranched stem. The stem is adorned with whorled, spear-shaped leaves arranged in spirals along its length. Topping the stem, clusters of large, trumpet-shaped flowers grace the landscape. Each flower typically displays six petals, forming an elegant star-shaped bloom. The bright orange petals, speckled with dark spots, create a striking contrast against the backdrop of the forest.
These visually appealing flowers, with a delicate fragrance, attract various pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. As these pollinators seek nectar, they inadvertently transfer pollen between the male and female reproductive structures of the plant resulting in cross-pollination and contributing to the lilies’ reproduction.
