Emerald Ash Borer

The drought of 2012 will be remembered by trees and shrubs for seasons to come. When plants are stressed, due to soil dryness and warmer temperatures, they are vulnerable to disease and insect infestations. These are perfect circumstances for the Emerald Ash Borer, which has already invaded many Ash trees in the Chicagoland.

There are a variety of treatments available to control the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer. Before beginning treatment, have the Ash tree evaluated. This ensures the tree is a viable candidate and will respond positively to any action taken. Treatment choice depends on a number of factors. The severity of the infestation and time of year are two factors to consider. In addition, understanding the insect life cycle helps determine treatment options. From August through October, the Emerald Ash Borer larvae feed on the host tree. The larvae bore through the bark into the cambium layer of the tree. After feeding, the larvae overwinter in the host tree and emerge as adults in late spring.

Kramer Tree Specialists offers a soil treatment to control the spread of Emerald Ash Borer. Fall is an excellent season for application. The product is a systemic insecticide applied as a soil drench or injected into the soil around the base of the tree. It’s recommended that treatment is reapplied annually, for optimal protection from Emerald Ash Borer.

Contact the Plant Health Care Department at KTS for more information on treatment options for Emerald Ash Borer and to have your trees evaluated by a Certified Arborist.
