Also known as “Heart Rot”, Heartwood Decay is caused by a fungus that deteriorates the inner wood of a tree. Decay is a naturally occurring tree process. Many times, a tree uses its’ own defense mechanisms to stop the fungus and decay from spreading throughout the tree. Also, just like people, healthy trees are less vulnerable to diseases. Following proper tree care practices goes a long way in helping a tree use its’ own natural defenses against fungus and decay. This includes mulching, watering, fertilizing and following proper pruning techniques. A healthy tree is the best defense against any natural issues that may affect the tree. In the case of Heartwood Decay, the fungus has managed to enter the inner wood and has eaten away much of the inside, causing large areas of hollow trunk. This process develops over many years, possibly without any outward visible signs of decay or fungus.

The fungus enters the tree through bark wounds. Wounds on a tree are caused by a number of factors, including storms, animals, vehicle accidents, lawn mowers, improper pruning practices and much more. Trees in urban settings face many more challenges than forest trees. Tree wounds are commonly caused by lawn equipment and other factors people-related. A homeowner should closely monitor any wounds a tree may have.
The presence of fungal fruiting bodies (mushrooms) near or in a wound is a definite indicator that decay is occurring. Carpenter Ants are also an indication of decay. Carpenter Ants are often mistakenly blamed for causing decay, when they are merely colonizing in pre-existing decayed wood. Because its’ a naturally occurring process, Heartwood Decay can affect any tree, deciduous or evergreen. Most often, the extent of the decay cannot be determined by simply looking at the tree. A Certified Arborist must inspect the tree, using Industry tools to accurately determine the level of damage present. The Arborist will evaluate the tree’s health and density. KTS offers this service and the proper tools needed to correctly diagnose the damage. Click here for more information on the tools and services offered by KTS for evaluating tree decay.
Safety is the number one reason tree decay should be evaluated. A weakened tree is prone to structural failure and can cause extensive harm and property damage. If a tree has suffered for many years from Heartwood Decay, it may be determined that the tree should be removed immediately. Because its’ almost impossible to visually determine the extent of inner wood damage, a Certified Arborist should be the one to make that judgment. Their knowledge and tools give you the information you need to make the right choice for your home and family.
